My wife and I moved here in 1988, and this might have been my last CQWW from here (and last SS two weeks ago). Back then I was pretty much a VHF contester (W2CRS) and occasional HF QRPer with medioce CW skills. Well, some things don't change :-). I choose this hilltop location for VHF, but lack of VHF activity and the ability to experiment with antennas on 5 acres made me into an HF contester. This month was the first time all the monobanders (single monobanders on 4 different towers plus a Hytower, 80M delta loop, and 160M 1/4 wl vertical) were working and rotatable, so I decided to put in a competitive effort timewise, which seems to get harder every year. If we can sell the house, we'll move to a milder climate next year, which probably means downsizing to a small tribander, a Hytower, and VHF/UHF antennas. Conditions this weekend were unexpectantly good. Charlie, N9CO, and I will operate the ARRL 160M test in December (if my long disused Ten Tec amp is working..), And Charlie will probably operate the 10M test. This entry was never intended to happen. I planned to get on and cherry pick a few new countries toward my QRP DXCC, and that was all. However, after putting in 5 hours Friday, I figured, What the Heck, Let's go for it. So I parked my behind firmly in my chair and did some serious (for me) DX hunting. Friday evening I closed with about 875 points, and thought "This will be a long, hard slog." I just wasn't hearing much DX at that point. Then Saturday, 10m seemed to open up and I began to make contacts. Now it's getting more interesting. I could see that 10K points was within my grasp. Pretty soon I had that, and was panting after 15K. Then that came and passed, and 20K looked pretty possible. This is starting to be fun. I closed out Saturday night with around 23K in the log. Then Sunday things really picked up. With all the multipliers I had been gathering as well as QSOs, the points display on TR Log starting moving up in big steps, around 230 to 300 points or more per step. Wow. During the last three hours, I had my best rate. Must be everyone was hungry and willing to dig for that weak guy in there calling them. My thanks to all the VEs and JAs I worked. I finally closed with just over 43K points, way beyond my wildest expectations for this contest. Now I have a benchmark for the future, and will shoot for 50K next year. It seems doable, now that I see how the game is played :-) I also picked up enough new countries to put me over the top for the ARRL QRP DXCC award. The setup here is really modest, a K2 at 5w and two 40m dipoles at more-or-less right angles to each other. I run TR Log on an ancient COMPAQ 33 MHz laptop, and it clicks right along. I'm just getting into computer logging, but it sure is addictive :-) I'll be looking for a lot of familiar calls in the ARRL 160m test next week. If you hear me, please dig me out. 73, Bob N6WG -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CQ Worldwide DX Contest, CW Call: WB6BWZ Operator(s): WB6BWZ Station: WB6BWZ Class: SOAB QRP QTH: CQZ 5 (Atlanta, GA) Operating Time (hrs): 20 Summary: Band QSOs Zones Countries ------------------------------ 160: 1 1 1 80: 9 3 3 40: 46 14 23 20: 40 13 22 15: 42 15 27 10: 93 15 44 ------------------------------ Total: 231 61 120 Total Score = 100,998 Club: South East Contest Club Comments: This was my second CQ-WW-CW contest. When Jeff decided to come down to operate the CW contest to go after the CW NA record, I said great, but then later I started thinking on how I was going to survive without doing my favorite contest... then I said I have to find a way to be active but at the same time to have fun..so I decided to put together a Remote contest Station and work people without bothering his station or him to me and went and Installed a remote system using TRx manager in one of the highest mountains in PR. It was all via de Internet, except the receive audio that I decide to run a UHF link for it, (it was supposed to run the audio also via the internet but the Voip software was a little unstable) The power issues and other personal things got in the way for a full effort but I loved it, It was one of the most rewarding experiences in my ham radio career... Just Imagine watching Jeff operate and at the same time running guys remotely just 10 Khz above him!!! Every qso required 5 clicks on the logging and Remote software since the keying from the log wasnt transparent, due to a little interface problem in the software, Im told It will be fixed. thats why sometimes It took some time to me to reply to the callers.. Thanks to Laourent F6dex for a great software and great support ( we where trying sofware patches all weekend long).. It was a very big rewarding weekend..
